Boxing star Ryan Garcia has voiced strong disapproval for the anticipated exhibition bout between Jake Paul and Gervonta Davis. Garcia, who was defeated by Davis via a body shot in April 2023, believes this upcoming fight is an unfair mismatch.
Garcia argues that `Tank` Davis, who stands at 5ft 5in (1.65m) and typically weighs around 135lbs (61kg), is taking on a significantly larger opponent in Jake Paul. Paul, standing at 6ft 1in (1.85m), has weighed up to 227lbs (103kg) during his boxing career, which Garcia believes makes the contest highly imbalanced despite Davis`s confidence that size won`t be a factor.
Garcia`s Critique of the Matchup
When the fight was announced in August, Ryan Garcia labeled it “delusional.” Jake Paul, however, suggested Garcia`s resentment stemmed from Paul getting a chance to defeat Davis, a feat Garcia failed to achieve.
“I think he’s just mad I’m gonna get an opportunity to beat ‘Tank’ and he obviously got knocked out and embarrassed,” Paul stated in an interview.
Garcia promptly responded on X, refuting Paul`s claims and emphasizing the stark size difference. “It’s really sad to see how dishonest he is,” Garcia wrote. “You are 200 pounds plus, you’ll make the 195-pound limit, then shoot to 215 most likely. And you lie to yourself to hype yourself up, you are fighting a 135-pound fighter, but you don’t see how that is a bit misleading. Lying to yourself sucks.”
He further reiterated his stance, aligning with UFC CEO Dana White`s criticisms. “Dana White said it, I’m saying it, no one’s hating, just fight someone your f—ing size. I loved his fight with [Julio Cesar Chavez] Jr, they were practically the same size, and he got full credit from myself and everyone else. So it’s not hating, just keeping things in order.”
Dana White`s Perspective
Dana White had also expressed his disdain for such mismatched fights, particularly when the Paul brothers are involved. Appearing on Logan Paul’s podcast, White didn`t mince words.
“You guys need to fight guys your f—ing same size. When you fought Floyd, you are massive, you’re a massive f—ing dude. Floyd’s tiny… And he did hit you with a bomb of an overhand right one time, and you f—ing ate it. You ate that punch,” White remarked, criticizing the size disparity in Logan Paul`s past bout with Floyd Mayweather as well.
Both Garcia and White consistently highlight the ethical concerns and lack of fair competition in bouts where there`s a significant size and weight advantage, advocating for more evenly matched contests in boxing.
