Jamie Vardy has announced his departure from Leicester City at the close of the current season, sharing the news in an emotional video statement.
This announcement comes after the Foxes` relegation from the Premier League was confirmed following their weekend defeat by Liverpool.
The club icon, hailed by Leicester as their `greatest-ever player`, was visibly emotional as he disclosed that this season would mark his final one at the King Power Stadium.
Vardy, 38, stated: “This is something I`ve considered and discussed with my family. I believe the time is right. It will be heartbreaking on the day of the last game, but all good things eventually come to an end.”
He commented on the emotional nature of the departure: “It`s going to be one of those emotional days. Who knows which way that can go. If you ask anyone, I’m not really an emotional guy. Nothing like that ever comes across with me, but when you’ve been somewhere for so long, and it is time to say goodbye, you just never know what your personal reaction is going to be.”
Vardy added: “I`ve spent 13 incredible years here, with numerous successes and some low points, but mostly highs. It`s finally time to step away, which I`m devastated about, but I feel the timing is appropriate.”
Vardy played a key role in helping Leicester gain promotion to the Premier League in 2014 and subsequently defying expectations to remain in the top flight.
The forward was also instrumental in the club`s remarkable Premier League title triumph during the 2015/16 season.

Leicester City released the following statement after Jamie Vardy revealed he would be leaving the club:
It read: “We can confirm legendary striker Jamie Vardy will leave Leicester City this summer after 13 seasons that have seen him become our greatest-ever player.
Jamie Vardy to leave Leicester City at the end of the 2024/25 season. The legendary striker leaves the Club after a trophy-laden 13 years. The 38-year-old is closing in on 500 appearances since joining City in 2012.
His final King Power Stadium appearance will be on Sunday 18 May. Vardy, 38, joined us for £1M from Fleetwood Town in 2012 and has gone on to become a Premier League, FA Cup, Community Shield and double Championship winner during a golden era for our Club.
There is no other player more synonymous with the incredible successes achieved in that time and, with nearly 500 appearances and almost 200 goals to his name, Vardy’s achievements on Filbert Way are unrivalled throughout our 141-year history.
Jamie’s final game at King Power Stadium will be on Sunday 18 May against Ipswich Town, where he will bid farewell to the supporters with whom he has lived through his rise from a non-league hopeful to one of the best goal scorers the Premier League has ever seen.”
He impressively scored 24 goals in that memorable campaign under manager Claudio Ranieri.
The team captain also played a significant part in the club`s victory in the FA Cup in 2021 against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.
These achievements seemed highly improbable when he first arrived at Leicester in 2012 from non-league side Fleetwood Town for a mere £1 million.
The veteran striker has netted 198 goals across 496 appearances for the club, making him their all-time leading Premier League scorer and their third-highest scorer overall.
He remained loyal to the Foxes after their relegation from the Premier League in 2023 and contributed to their immediate return the subsequent season.
However, Vardy was unable to prevent the club`s relegation back to the Championship this season.
Leicester City Chairman Aiyawatt `Top` Srivaddhanaprabha commented: “Jamie is one of a kind. He is a special player and an even more exceptional person. He holds a place in the hearts of everyone associated with Leicester City, and he certainly has my deepest respect and admiration. I am profoundly grateful for everything he has given to this football club.”
The chairman added: “While Jamie`s time as a player with us is concluding, he and his family will always be welcomed back to King Power Stadium with open arms, given all he has accomplished. On behalf of everyone at Leicester City, I wish Jamie and his family the very best for the future, and I know our supporters will join us in giving him the send-off he truly deserves at the end of this season.”
Vardy`s final match at the King Power Stadium is scheduled for May 18th, when the Foxes host Ipswich Town.
His potentially last game for the club could be the season`s final match the following week against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
Vardy undoubtedly wished for a better swansong, having previously described this relegation season as a “s**t show”.
He is currently ranked 15th among the all-time top scorers in the Premier League with 143 goals, a remarkable feat considering he made his debut in the division at the age of 27.
His Premier League goal tally surpasses that of notable players such as Robbie Keane, Nicolas Anelka, Dwight Yorke, Ian Wright, and Steven Gerrard.
