ALEJANDRO GARNACHO has confirmed he is committed to staying at Manchester United and is poised to potentially break one of his idol Cristiano Ronaldo`s records before the current season concludes.
The 20-year-old Argentine shrugged off comparisons with Ronaldo as he stands on the verge of surpassing a specific achievement of the Portuguese superstar.
Nevertheless, Garnacho understands that he will likely face such comparisons throughout his time as a United player.
Notably, it was Ronaldo who provided the assist for the winger`s first senior goal for the Red Devils in November 2022.
Just weeks after Ronaldo`s departure from Old Trafford for the second time, the fans in the Stretford End terrace began chanting Garnacho`s name to the tune previously reserved for the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Yet, deep down, this connection to his idol is likely something he embraces.
After all, he is the player who continues to rate the Real Madrid icon as the greatest of all time, even while being an international teammate of Barcelona legend Lionel Messi.
Garnacho shared on Instagram that it felt like a dream the first time he played alongside Ronaldo for United against Sheriff Tiraspol.
There were even unconfirmed reports – later denied by the player – suggesting he had avoided Messi on several occasions when Argentina lifted the Copa América last year, purportedly due to his strong admiration for Ronaldo.
Adding to the narrative, Garnacho famously replicated Ronaldo’s `Siuu` celebration after scoring a spectacular overhead kick against Everton and was spotted wearing CR7-branded underwear during a cup tie at Wigan last season.
Therefore, it’s certain that he is aware he has an opportunity to outdo his idol in one specific area before the season ends.
Before turning 21, Ronaldo was directly involved in 25 Premier League goals for United. Following his goal in Sunday’s loss at Brentford, Garnacho is now just one involvement shy of matching that figure.
With three Premier League fixtures remaining before he celebrates his 21st birthday in July, this record appears well within his reach.
Garnacho appeared relaxed during the press conference, showing a tattoo on his hand featuring his son Enzo`s name.
He commented: “I’m not focused on the numbers.
“When Cristiano played here, he was a different footballer and there were different types of games.
“I just try to help the team and win games.
“Regarding missed chances and things, we are training really hard, all the strikers, and I think we are improving. We will try to do better.”
Earlier in the season, there was a period when it seemed Garnacho might follow Ronaldo`s path out of Old Trafford.
He struggled initially under Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim`s new management and was excluded from the squad for the Manchester derby in December due to disciplinary issues.
He has since regained favour with the manager since the autumn but has not yet reached double figures for combined goals and assists this term.
Garnacho explained: “My first two months, November and December, were very difficult for me but my mentality is to keep working, to keep trying and show to the manager and staff I have to play.
“Obviously we have to work hard to be in the squad and then I have to train well every day and be available for all the games.”
“I speak with Rasmus Hojlund a lot. We try to help each other.
“Sometimes, from this side, it’s difficult but we try hard, try harder every game to try to score more of these chances, and the team will improve if we score more goals.”
With Amorim favouring a 3-4-3 formation, Garnacho admitted it required some adjustment time.
He said: “It’s difficult for everyone when, in the middle of the season, a new manager comes in and we change the formation.
“But we just need to improve every day. Obviously, the manager knows the characteristics of the players.
“What we try to do depends on the players we have and we are improving as a team also.”
Garnacho impressed in the 3-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés last week, securing a strong advantage for United.
He has encouraged his teammates to complete the task at Old Trafford and approach the Europa League semi-final second leg with the correct mindset.
Winning a European trophy would also guarantee United a spot in next season’s Champions League – a significant boost for everyone involved.
Furthermore, it would allow Garnacho to participate in a competition where a certain 40-year-old veteran Portuguese winger frequently excelled.
The Argentina international added: “We know we are not doing a great job in the Premier League but the manager said before, we follow the rules and, for us, it’s a final tomorrow.
“We are going to face the game like it’s 0-0 and try to win the game, not just the tie.
“If we win the Europa League, we will be in the Champions League and then we can face the next season with a better mentality and in a different way.”
Staying Put
Garnacho intends to remain at United this summer.
Despite speculation that the Red Devils might sell him to help balance their finances, Garnacho asserts that he is happy at the club.
Meanwhile, Amorim has stated that captain Bruno Fernandes is not available for transfer, despite renewed interest from Saudi Arabia.
Both players have been vital to United`s progress towards a potential Europa League final appearance.
Garnacho commented on transfer rumours: “As a footballer, you are always going to listen and hear some rumours about the future.
“But I have a contract here until 2028 so I’m happy here.”
A substantial offer for Garnacho could still be tempting for United, even with his improved performance recently. As a homegrown player, his sale would significantly aid their efforts to comply with the Premier League`s profit and sustainability regulations.
Conversely, Fernandes has consistently been considered one of the few United players who are not for sale.
Al Hilal is reportedly preparing a lucrative bid worth £1 million per week to entice the Portuguese playmaker to the Middle East.
However, Fernandes signed a new contract with United last year and remains one of the select group of players the club is unwilling to sell.
He demonstrated his importance last week by scoring two goals, giving the Red Devils a healthy lead going into the Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Bilbao.
Amorim spoke about Fernandes: “I think it is easy to understand his importance – not just because of the numbers but the way he plays, the importance that he has during his five years here.
“He is a top player, we need top players. He is a leader, he’s the captain, so he’s really important.
“It’s normal that a lot of clubs want a player like Bruno, like Garnacho, like others.
“But we want to keep the best players, and Bruno is clearly one of the top players in the world, so our idea didn’t change.
“We want Bruno here.”
